Original Christmas Songs: Your Favorites?

We all know the old Christmas carols, but every now and then an original Christmas song comes along that’s so good we’re not embarrassed to listen to it right alongside those classics.

In Southern Gospel, we happen to have one of the most beloved of these modern classics: “Mary Did You Know?” Contemporary Christian boasts the standard “Breath of Heaven.”

What other original Christmas songs do you think have special merit? For purposes of this post, we’ll focus on the sacred versus the secular.

I have 4 not in any specific order:
A Baby Changes Everything- Faith Hill
It All Started With a Child- Johnny Reid
Make it Christmas Day- Jann Arden
Born on Christmas Day- Brad Paisley

    • Aw, I remember hearing that last one on Paisley’s Christmas album. It’s the one he wrote when he was a kid. A really sweet song, not a great one I don’t think but showed his potential to be sure.

If that’s the only one you recognize, I would strongly reccomend looking up the others, and another good (not necessarily Christian song, but I think it’s a decent message) is Faith Hill’s “Where Are you Christmas”

      • Actually I have heard Faith Hill’s song and liked it. Haven’t heard the other two. Thanks for the recs!

    No Room – Rhett Akin
Let’s Make A Baby king – New Grass Revival
There’s A New kid In Town – Keith whitley

    Oh so many… :)

Light a Candle – EHSS did it, but I still love Avalon’s best
While You Were Sleeping – Casting Crowns
The Birth of the King – Clint Black
    One King – David Phelps
Sing Noel, Sing Hallelujah – Michael W. Smith
Emmanuel (Hallowed Manger Ground) – Chris Tomlin
When Love Was Born – Mark Schultz
Strange Way to Save the World – 4Him & Jason Crabb
Glorious Impossible – Gaither Vocal Band
Welcome To Our World – Chris Rice & MIchael W. Smith
Labor of Love – The Isaacs…but I’m partial to Randy Travis’ version
Christmas in Kentucky – Steven Curtis Chapman

    Merry Christmas!

    • Excellent choices! Among those, my favorites are “Sing Noel, Sing Hallelujah,” “Hallowed Manger Ground,” “When Love Was Born” (a neglected gem), “Strange Way to Save the World,” “Glorious Impossible,” and “Welcome to Our World.” From Steven Curtis Chapman, I really like “Going Home for Christmas,” “Our God is With Us,” and “All I Really Want.” Be sure to check out his two older Christmas albums, especially the first one.

      Merry Christmas!

Oh, I have them…they’re at the top of the pile every year. Love The Night Before Christmas (but I was trying to keep the list short!). Also adore Christmas Card, I Am Joseph, and Happy New Year from the new cd.
And more from DP…Angel Lullaby, Joy Joy, Hark the Herald, & To Make a King….just to name a few.
And have to throw Reaching by the GVB in there, as well.
After my parents died, it took a few years before I could listen to Going Home for Christmas…but I’m there. :)

Joy Williams, “Here with us” is another nice one.

  7. Saved Girl

It’s About the Cross by Go Fish is at the top of the list for me.
Glorious Impossible by the Gaithers is one of my favorites.
Glory to God in the Highest is another great one. I don’t know who did it first, but I like EHSS’s version the best.
    Tonight by EHSS
Changed by a Baby Boy by EHSS
Peace on Earth Tonight, the Collingsworths’ new Christmas song, is really great as well.
